50th Anniversary of the Seattle World’s Fair
In 1962, Seattle created the Space Needle and the Monorail while hosting the World’s Fair. The Seattle Center (seattlecenter.com) is commemorating the event with six months of competitions, exhibits, and more. Explore the past in the tour History Exhibit: Celebrating Century 21, Apr 21–Oct 21, or interpret it in November with a special Pacific Northwest Ballet dance production by Mark Morris dedicated to the anniversary. Celebrate science in June with the first-ever Seattle Science Festival, a monthlong series of science and technology events, lectures from luminaries, and a large-scale science expo featuring games and demonstrations, hands-on exhibits and experiments.
Gauguin Downtown
The Seattle Art Museum (seattleartmuseum.org) brings Polynesian arts and culture into the center of Gauguin studies with Gauguin and Polynesia: An Elusive Paradise. The exhibit’s only U.S. stop reveals the influence Polynesia had on Gauguin through a display of paintings, sculptures and works on paper. Feb 9–Apr 29.
King Tut Comes to Seattle
Thirty-three years after his first visit, the boy-king returns. Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs features more than 100 objects from King Tut’s tomb and will be on display at the Pacific Science Center (pacificsciencecenter.org) May 24, 2012–Jan 6, 2013.
Chihuly Opens Garden and Glass
Renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly moves into the Seattle Center this spring. Garden and Glass will have a 12,208-square-foot exhibition hall and will feature works of Chihuly’s most popular series, architectural installations, and a 43-foot-tall, 4,500-square-foot glass house, home to five red and yellow chandeliers designed to appear as one installation.
Game On
Seattle lost its NBA team in 2008, but the women still reign. Two-time WNBA champs Seattle Storm rock KeyArena May–September. Meanwhile, the city is crazy about soccer: The Seattle Sounders FC play March–October at CenturyLink Field, which is also home to the Seattle Seahawks, September– January.
